Welcome to SnarkyType. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit and use snarkytype.net (the “Service”). By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

1. Information We Collect

Account information: When you create an account we collect your username, email address, and password (securely hashed). We may also store display name, bio, age, and profile information you provide.
Usage & performance data: We collect runtime metrics such as WPM, accuracy, test durations, and aggregated statistics to show results and improve the Service.
Content & communications: Any content you post or messages you send (profile bio, support messages) are stored and used to provide the Service.
Device & log information: Standard server logs including IP addresses, timestamps, browser and OS information, and crash reports may be collected.
Security & audit logs: For security, abuse prevention, debugging, and enforcement, we may record important actions performed in the Service (for example: login events, account changes, moderation actions, and friend-request actions). These logs may include timestamps, account identifiers, request metadata, and IP address (and an approximate coarse location derived from IP).
Payments & purchase data: For in-app purchases (none as of last update), we DO NOT store purchase records (amounts, timestamps). Our third parties store this information.
Cookies & tracking: We use cookies and similar technologies to maintain sessions, handle authentication, and store preferences.
Anonymous identifier (optional): If you consent via the cookie banner while logged out, we may store an anonymous identifier cookie so we can associate certain important security/diagnostic events across requests (for example: opening the Register page). You can opt out using the banner option.

2. Google Tag & Analytics

SnarkyType includes Google Tag (gtag.js) used for analytics and performance measurement. The Google Tag gathers anonymous usage information such as page views, session duration, and events. We do not tie Google Tag data to personal information we store for accounts, except in limited cases where an account owner explicitly opts into marketing or otherwise links an identifier. See Google's terms at https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads. We do not own Google nor are we affiliated with them in any way. We just use Google Tag for marketing and analytics purposes.

3. How We Use Your Information

To provide and maintain the Service, process results, award SnarkyCoins, and manage accounts.
To communicate with you about your account, promotions (if opted-in), and important Service updates.
To detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse or violations of our Terms of Service including cheating detection.
For analytics and product improvement.

4. Email Collection & Communications

We collect your email to create and manage your account, send verification emails, password resets, and critical notifications. If you opt-in to marketing communications we may send occasional product updates and promotions. You can unsubscribe from marketing emails via the link in those emails or by changing preferences in your account settings.

5. Data Sharing & Disclosure

We do not sell your personal data. We may share data with:

Service providers that help us operate (payment processors, hosting providers, email providers) under contractual confidentiality obligations.
Legal authorities where required by law, court order, or in response to lawful requests.
When required to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the safety of any person, or to protect SnarkyType's rights.

6. Banning, Enforcement & Appeals

Accounts that violate our Terms (cheating, abuse, harassment, payment fraud) may be suspended or banned. We keep records of bans and may retain related content for logs and investigations. If your account is suspended or banned you may contact support at support@snarkytype.net to appeal. Appeals are reviewed manually and may take several business days.

7. Data Retention & Security

We retain your account information and usage data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. We may retain security and audit logs for longer where necessary to maintain the safety and integrity of the Service, investigate abuse, or comply with legal obligations. For security we use industry standard practices (password hashing, TLS for network traffic). While we endeavor to protect your data, no system is completely secure — please use strong unique passwords and enable any extra protections we provide.

8. Children and Minors

SnarkyType is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe we have collected personal information from your child, contact support immediately.

9. International Transfers

We may transfer and store your information on servers located outside your country. By using the Service you consent to such transfers.

10. Changes to this Policy

We may update this policy over time. Significant changes will be announced on the website, the changelog, or via email where appropriate.
